The Spatial Awareness Ladder: Comparing Game Controls

Games ask different things of a player. Tapping an object, timing a jump, rotating a camera, and choosing an item from an inventory can each be a new challenge. This guide compares those demands so you can choose where to help.

Use this as a menu of challenges. These levels are an editorial framework, not validated developmental milestones. A child can enjoy several at once, skip one, or return to a familiar kind of play. We do not use them to assign a starting age or promise gains outside the game.

For complete starting setups and suggested paths, see Your Kidโ€™s First Games.

1. Direct touch: make something happen

In Pok Pok, a child can touch and move an object directly. Try one toy together and notice which interactions they choose to repeat.

Your role: Show a tap or drag if they ask, then leave room to explore. Physical toys remain another good choice; touchscreen play is not a prerequisite for games with a controller.
